The Santa Ship Comes To Town

We are so lucky to have neighbors that invite the Santa Ship to her home. We are also lucky to be on the party invite list too! The local boy scouts man the ship and organize the kids during this fun night. The weather was just right. Warm enough that running around kept the kids from needing jackets and cold enough to crave that spiked hot chocolate. Since it was all outdoors we got to bring Jessie. And of course she had a wish for Santa.

The Future According to S

S: Mommy, how long will you live in this house?
Me:Oh, I don't know. Probably until you and your sisters are all grown up and the house is too big for us.
S: Oooh! Why can't you live with us?

whaa, whaa, whaa!

I stopped right there and said, "ok, I will.I promise."

Jessie's First Movie

I just found this on my camera when I was downloading yesterday. I didn't even know she knew how to take movies, but I guess she does now. I could not stop laughing after watching this. I think I was over my aunt's house when she did this. Too funny!

The Office Visit

Today M had an appt./consultation with the oral surgeon for her receeding gum on a front tooth. I was a bit nervous about this appt. because I knew it was going to expensive, but I had no clue that that would be the least of my problems today. I had tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum with me as well and gave them the usual "pep" talk about doctor office behavior. E brought her purse and I thought that whatever she had inside would most likely keep her occupied, later I would regret that thought. We were seen right away and were crammed into an itty bitty office with a dental chair, surgeon and nurse. Things were going along smoothly. The dentist was nice and asked about everyone's school. As he examined M more I noticed that the nurse was grinning and looking behind me at E and S. I turned my head around to see and S had his mouth completely covered in masking tape and before I could say, "What in the wo..." E had ripped that tape so fast off his face that he screamed like the monkeys we saw at the San Diego Zoo. I closed my eyes to compose myself and with my nice mommy voice I asked E, "Where did you get the tape from?" and she said, "I got it from home so I can work on my project." I didn't have the energy to find out anymore. I quickly signed all the paperwork to get the heck out of there, but I'll be sure to have her help me if I decide to wax my eyebrows.

Not Coping With the School Schedule

As I write this, my dog has bitten me for the 5th time this morning, stolen lunch baggies, torn up school papers and destroyed her bedding. The bites aren't painful, but she is making a mess and needs constant attention. She wants me to chase her and when I don't she just stares at me with THOSE eyes from the top of the couch. I think she hates the idea that the kids have gone back to school. Apparently she has already forgotten the fashion show E put her through. She was a prima ballerina complete with crown. Poor poor Jessie. I guess it is back to lazy days, well, as soon as she stops nipping me.

Back To School...Whoo Hoo!!

Too cool for school and Junior High. At least she let me take her picture before running to the car. She insisted on No lunch box and purple jeans. So far I'm doing good. I only have to drive 1x a week in the carpool I'm in. I guess I only have one chance to embarrass her per week. I think I will play my ABBA cd next time.

My new blond son loved getting ready this morning. His new shirt was ready to go and dad did his hair. He ate his breakfast, got his backpack and was out the door by 7:30. He was excited to see his friends and teacher. We lucked out with getting E's teacher for S this year, so he already knew her name. E was a little more work. She didn't like the idea of getting up at all probably because she didn't fall asleep to after 9:30pm. She insisted on her gold converses and plaid jacket for the first day. She said the jacket makes her look professional.

I should have included a picture of my smiling face in this post. At school I had to meet up with the board members for coffee chat with the principal after the bell rang. It was nice to see everyone and introduce myself to new parents. I was overwhelmed with all the activities coming up in the fall. The back to school BBQ, fundraiser prep, Parent's Night Out, and yearbook. I will be busy!! But now is the time to get pedicures with my friends and then we were off to the movies for some girl time. Yeah School!!!

The Big Dance 2009

What a night! E danced her heart out tonight with 100's of other talented girls (and a couple boys). The studio she dances for really has this down. Each set of dancers went out totally prepared and on time. We got to see 3 years olds all the way up to the alumni dancers in over 50 productions. The costumes got better and better with each set of dancers. It was very entertaining to watch. E has been beaming all week and on the way home from the performance she begged to be on a competition team next year. We've got a couple months to relax and prepare for the next season. I hope she still has the "bug".

Father's Day 2009

Look at that proud papa! We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast at Auntie L's house and then finished the morning riding our bikes. Nana and Buckey each had their own bikes thanks to their kids. All 11 of us were on bikes!! We rode the new trail with no accidents even though some of us hadn't been on a bike in over 10 years. Amazing how you don't forget. Our little man as of last week can ride his bike training wheel free, although his sudden stops are breath-taking. Our next bike riding adventure will be in Lake Tahoe. So many great trails to try!

E The Poet....goes camping with the dog

We recently went camping at New Brighton Beach and brought the dog too. This was her first time camping and going on the beach. It was a lot of work as usual, but as you can read they had a lot of fun playing with the dog and getting dirty.

Jessie's first camping memrays
Jessie's first camping memrays
So fun and so sandy
dig in sand and roll in it too
fun for Jessie and fun for you
sleeping in tents all cosy and warm
no bears and no harm
last day was the funnest
soup for Jessie on the last day
And flowers for Jessie. Horray!

The Boy's Cake

Tomorrow is his party and we all know how much he loves his video games. This was a pretty simple cake. It was just a square, rectangle, and a couple of cupcakes. I stressed more on the frosting recipe that I wasn't too happy with. I don't like buttercream. I'm more of a whipped cream person when it comes to cakes. But my favorite is caramel frosting. I use that one for banana cakes. mmm. Taking this photo was a feat in itself. What you can't see is the blessed dog on the right eyeing the cake. I'm trying to focus with the camera and I can hear her pulling on the tablecloth. She would just love to lick all that blue frosting, maybe tomorrow.

The Day the Fuzz Came to Town.

Today was very bizarre. As I was walking to school, I noticed lots of fluffy white things floating through the air. It looked exactly like the down from baby birds. As I got towards the school the path became covered in this stuff. One of the houses up against the trail had it all over their lawn and bushes. Now it reminded me of soft snow. The wind blew again and then I saw tons of it blow out of a tree. I guess it is some kind of seeds from the tree. The kids could not stop themselves from touching it so I suggested we go home get baggies and of course the camera. S wants it for "show and tell" on friday and E told her siblings she can now make her own stuffed animals like "build a bear". What a cool day. In all the years I've lived here this has never happened. Which also reminds me of the crazy population of squirrels in my backyard. I'll have to take pictures of the new family of squirrels that drives my dog nuts too.

Holy, Holy, Holy!

We had a very busy weekend with two First Communion celebrations in our family. I thought the rain would ruin everything, but things turned out fine. Family and friends helped get the house ready for lunch inside. I was planning on having all the tables outside for this event. The food was great and the cake turned out great too. E loved having all the attention and getting to dress like a little bride. I remember when I was 7 and making my 1st Communion too. My mom had all the tables decorated with pink daisies. Both my girls were able to wear my veil and gloves for the occasion. The gloves were made for me by my Grandma Rose. They still look brand-new. We got her dress from the "My Twinn" company and had to order the dress for her doll too. It was a nice surprise for her. Most of our family and friends were able to attend although some were sorely missed. A big thanks to all the ladies that helped in the kitchen. I couldn't have done it without you. This was a blessed day for all.

What's In Your Pockets?

I just want to clarify yet another reason why I think raising children is like taking care of the mentally insane. Today while doing laundry, mounds and mounds, I was forced to go through dozens of pockets. Today wasn't any different than any other day so I thought I'd share what I have found in those itty bitty little pockets of my children.
-rocks (all sizes and shapes, most likely picked up from the creek)
-dandelions
-lots of candy wrappers(no doubt, candy I had no idea they ate)
-chapsticks (that have been twisted up and down and smashed into the cap)
-old bandaids (I don't even want to know if they belonged to my child)
-legos and legos and more legos
-a note from a teacher that their class has been exposed to Strep Throat (lovely)
-twist ties (over 50) from the food bin section at the grocery store
-And an occasional evil crayon that can ruin a dryer and clothes in less than 30 minutes

Recently a lip balm had escaped my search and ended up in the dryer. Our clothes had oil stains all over them. I was so mad. But my husband had the perfect thing to say, "You've GOT to check their pockets before you wash them!" I think they have a room waiting for me at the crazy house.

Breakfast in Bed

Good Friday to you all. I woke up to a wonderful morning of breakfast in bed, creatively made by my 8 and 5 year old. They cheerfully woke me up and demanded I eat what they made me right away. If it was a bagel or toast it would have been fine, but that wasn't on the menu this morning. Instead I got a large bowl full of chopped strawberries, a couple of banana chunks, and tons of white chocolate chips all drenched in chocolate syrup and honey. Yum. I nervously took a bite while looking into my son's huge blue eyes and at his chocolate laced mouth. Then he told me, "We're sharing breakfast." And we did.

The Easter Bunny is Coming to Town...In a Convertable!

I had just a little time left in my crazy week to make these for S and E's class for the Easter festivities. I saw them in a magazine and thought, "how hard could these be?" Well the answer is very! First of all they require 6 different candies/items and frosting. Second of all, who knew how difficult it would be to find Lifesavers candies. I had to go to 3 different stores to find them. And don't look too close because some of the bunnies couldn't sit in their seat for the ride and began to slide sideways. The kids had fun unwrapping the candy, counting the leftovers and eating them. Let's hope the rest of their class does too.

It's My Party and I'll Bark If I Want to!

Birthday Girl, Jessie, Turns 2 today. To celebrate we got out her party hat and collar.
And we got a special dog treat from a dog specialty store just for today. Just like one of the kids, she licked all the frosting off first and then devoured the cookie. Now if we can keep her from eating the hat it will have been a great 2nd birthday.

Brace Face

Ew! Now she almost looks like a teenager. Ew! Her father and I laugh because she was so stinkin' giddy about getting them. She could not wait for today to come. We'll see how she's feeling later on when she' begging for an advil. Good news is they will be off in 18 months. Bad news is she is wearing her dad's new car in her mouth. Lucky for us we got the "payment plan" which will also work as our reminder to keep those teeth healthy and away from sticky foods. We're also hoping the braces will work as a boy deterent as well, but that's a stretch. I think we can ask for the head-gear if necessary :)

E Turns Eight

E really enjoyed her 8th birthday will all her friends. She picked to have a Hello Kitty Cupcake birthday which all started with stationery we found at the Sanrio store. I saw the giant cupcake pan in a magazine and I knew it would be perfect. It really didn't take that long to frost it and add few sprinkles. At the party each of the girls got to decorate their own cupcake with all sorts of frostings and sprinkles. And we lucked out with the great weather as you can see below. Our family party is this Sunday and I'll post a pic of that cupcake later.

The Birthday Cake

After going to a few local bakeries and researching a custom birthday cake for my dad's 70th birthday, I came to the conclusion that I was going to have to pay $300 or make the cake myself. I've made a few birthday cakes in the past and always made my dad's German chocolate cake for his birthdays. I just had to think on a bigger scale...like for 50 people instead of 10.I was really nervous using fondant for the first time. I didn't know if it was going to crack on me or bleed the edible gold paint into the cookie "watch". It took 3 days to make the cake in stages and then on Saturday morning I finished the writing and put the pocket watch on it. My hands were literally shaking as I lifted the gold chain onto the cake. The cake weighed over 10lbs. My mom loved it and so did my dad. I didn't even mind cutting it. The frosting was delish and so was the filling with coconut and pecans. Nothing is worse than finding half eaten plates of cake when you knew how much love and effort went into. I am happy to report that everyone had their cake and ate it too.

The Mystery Spot

During winter break, dad took off a day to do some type of outing. We couldn't think of anything on this rainy Thursday. Then we remembered the "Mystery Spot" just outside of Santa Cruz, deep in the forest. We tried to explain it to the kids but they thought we were just crazy. M just shook her head. We had lunch first at the wharf in SC. MMM! fish and chips! I'm so glad all the kids like fish. After lunch we had some of Marianne's Ice Cream (a local favorite) and took in the free entertainment aka-napping sea lions. When we reached our destination, fire engines and a ambulance pulled up after us. Apparently some lady lost her balance, fell and hit her head. She was fine!! But our kids were really wondering where we had taken them. We waited for our guided tour in the corny gift shop. They had everything from edible chocolate crickets to souvenier magnets of every size. The announcement for our tour saved us from making a purchase. The kids enjoyed all the "parlor tricks" of the mystery shack and it was really hard not to get dizzy. really. The whole experience was fun and different...especially with the fire engine!

100th Day of School

Can you believe it? We've reached the 100th day of school and only 80 days left! I had to share the kinders in their celebration hats. Too funny. We spent the morning making necklaces out of 100 pieces of fruit loop cereal, we had a bean bag relay with 100 bean bags and made our own snack bags with, you guessed it, 100 things. Ahh! The simple days of kindergarten.

My Boy's Quote of the Day

I get the best insight into my 5 year old's psychi as he lays in bed just about to fall asleep.

" I love Jessie. She just like a person except she's made out of dog."

God Bless bedtime!

Tamale Girl

E had her first cooking lesson with her Nina last weekend and she learned the tradition of making Tamales. This is one food I don't see myself making in the future. This has got to be the most labor intensive food item I've ever seen. The meat is simmered for hours the previous day until it falls apart. The chile sauce is made from dried roasted chiles that have to be reconstituted, cooked, pureed and then strained thru a mill. When those two things are done, then you buy the masa from a local mexican grocer. The chile sauce is added to the meat and to the masa along with the cooking broth from the meat. The corn husks have been soaked in hot water to soften up. We were then instructed to spread the masa in a very specific way on the husks. Too much masa makes the tamale not fold up correctly, too much masa on the top of the husk makes it impossible to seal. Not enough liquid on your spreading spoon makes the masa peel off the husk. Did I mention the cramps in your hand from doing this? I was in pain after we did over 140 tamales. After they are all put together they have to steam in a special pot for over 2 hours. All thru the day E never complained. All she needed was a couple breaks for cherry limeade. Thanks Nina Corina for a really fun experience!

Our Oldest Baby is now 12.

Every time I mention how old M is turning, I just see blank faces with jaws dropping. This is that same little girl that had to drink ovaltine everyday, believed in Santa, the toothfairy and the Easter bunny,WANTED a baby sister, and listened to the Wiggles and Barney in the car. Back then I knew everything she wanted to know and her daddy could fix anything broken. Something happenend overnight or maybe it was a holiday weekend, but she grew up. M woke up one morning and suddenly craved a latte from Starbucks. When we go to a restaurant she gives me the "eye" if the hostess asks if I need 3 children's menus. She's taller than my mom and I'm sure she will pass me this year. Instead of fighting over toys, she now fights with her siblings about the bathroom or who touched her mp3 player or who put soap on her retainer. Her dad and I are trying to cope with all these changes. I hate that she is starting to see me as NOT the smartest person she knows. I've had to get really creative with helping her with the drama of 6th grade. I think I still have a chance, however Daddy isn't so sure of his "repairing" skills. Seeing his little girl in tears can still break him up a bit. I pity the day boys enter the scene. I have a feeling my husband will be taking Anger Managment classes to avoid strangling the boys that break her heart. We've got time, right?
